POST YOUR TOP 5 TRIP HOP CDs

topic posted Thu, October 30, 2003 - 1:35 PM by
Let's find out what everyone loves and perhaps turn each other onto some new music

1) Meiso- DJ Krush (and not much later)
2) Wagon Christ's throbbing pouch
3) Laika - sounds of the satellite
4) Puracane things you should leave alone
5) Neotropic 15 levels of magnification

these last three are not purely trip hop CDs but have a lot of that sensibility in them and they are not widely known so I want to add them to turn people onto to them

ridiculous ommissions:

anything by Portishead
that lovely Massive Attack CD (which I can't find, damnit) that has the Elizabeth Fraser
songs on it
a lot of SHANTEL

Given that you like lamb, olive and hooverphonic you should really do yourself a favor and check out the aforementioned San Francisco group, Puracane,
      "Things you should leave Alone".

I know nothing about them (which is wierd as I only live
an hour and a half south of them in Santa Cruz)

      yours, Rick

Actually, I've got that album...it's another good one, but not as compelling for me as the ones listed. Ever listen to Nightmares on Wax?

Nightmares on Wax rules -- a wonderfully funky, jazzy, trip-hop disk. I spin up one of their tracks at almost every chill set -- they're very addictive.

I agree nightmares on Wax is kick ass, I also spin their stuff into about every set, I'm especially fond of their song 70's 80's.

Meiso was good, but i like MiLight better.. ofcourse that is almost completely hip-hop as opposed to trip-hop. I dunno I like krush in general though. As for my Trip hop top 5....

    Tricky- Premillenium Tension
    Tricky- Nearly God
Lamb- (the first album, not sure of the name)
    Portishead- Dummy
    Massive Attack- Mezzazine

Actually any of the above artist albums are probably up there on my list but these are always in constant rotation in my itunes.

    Massive Attack
    Tricky
    Portishead
    Laika
    Baxter

Air, Bjork (if you consider her newer stuff trip-hop)
and Boards of Canada (not sure either on the genre labeling)
also are on my top fav's

      Neena,
I'm so glad that you mentioned Laika.
Their second CD is just a masterpiece of electronic pop, IMHO.

I have to say I was really dissapointed by the thing they just released which is far more prosaic and soul/blues oriented. I love r&b, soul and blues but the music world is really saturated with those forms.

I didn't put them in my trip hop list merely because they do other styles besides trip hop on that CD but it is one of my favorite all time CDs.

And, aprpopos of nothing, have you heard the 'danger and uncertainty' mix of "Joyful Girl' by Ani Difranco. I'm not even a huge fan of Ani's music but that remix is a wonderful trip hop tune. It's on the remix CD called 'more joy, less shame'.

      3.Bjork- Homogenic

    1) MUGGS "Dirt"
    2) Wagonchrist "Throbbing Pouch"
    3) Moloko "Do You Like My Tight Sweater?"
    4) Thievery Corporation "The Mirror Conspiracy"

glad you mentioned Throbbing Pouch, Saynt.

it's still my favorite Wagonchrist recording.

I already mentioned them earlier but I'm blown away by how few people are hip to everything by the Berlin group, TARWATER.

They don't have the sultry woman singer thang that a lot of trip hop has but their grooves, originality and creativity are just superlative. Check them!

Check out Anjali "World of Lady A" VERY GOOD! Also might want to check our Kelli Ali's (vocalist from Sneaker Pimps) two solo albums. Cesaria Evora's remix album "Club Sodade" is pretty good too.
  • Re: POST YOUR TOP 5 TRIP HOP CDs

    Mon, July 26, 2004 - 11:34 AM
    1) Portishead - Roads
    2) Propeller Heads - History Repeating (Feat. Shirley Bassey)
    3) Sneakerpimps - Becoming X
    4) Halou - Blue Eye Smile Girl
    5) Swandive - Demunication

okay, so i've heard both ways on number two. some people say it's not trip hop, others do. as far as i'm concerned it's so trip hop it hurts, so if i'm wrong and have a gross misunderstanding of what trip hop is, please let me know
  • SHOCKING. not strictly trip hop, but surely they rate!? I love them. But this list thing was good. always good to discover new music. Also, check out Martina Topley-Bird's(Tricky) solo albums. She's awesome

I gotta chime in on the Thievery Corp pitch. I happily stumbled on to em half a dozen years ago and have inhaled everything I could get my hands on by them since as if it were air itself.

I also would highly recommend the 187 film soundtrack and Death In Vegas' last 3 efforts.
